What the critics have to say…

This Volvo looks high-tech and modern thanks to a vertically oriented, tablet-style touch-screen infotainment system. Appearance is the best part of the interface, though it has frustrating controls and a confusing menu layout.

The 2022 Volvo XC40 continues to be one of the more stylish — and safer — choices among compact luxury SUVs.

HOW DOES IT DRIVE?

The XC40 feels “good” overall. The turbocharged four-cylinder engine feels plucky, but in reality it isn’t.

The XC40 feels soft.   Road imperfections feel like they are moving the vehicle.  It feels neither agile nor tied-down, which puts it in a strange place.

IS IT RELIABLE AND HIGH QUALITY?

The XC40 is well put together and reliable.

HOW COMFORTABLE IS IT?

When there isn’t much to deal with the ride is very comfortable.  Small bumps are no problem, however, larger bumps push the vehicle around a bit. The seats are comfortable, but for some people the headrests are angled too far forward.

The cabin is not particularly quiet.  Both wind and road noise are part of the experience with the XC40.

WHAT IS THE INTERIOR LIKE?

Most controls are via touchscreen access. The UI is unfortunately, a frustrating mess.

The XC40’s interior is above average for this class. You can slide in and out of the cabin and there’s enough legroom in the back for folks of an average height. Visibility is excellent.

WHAT IS THE TECHNOLOGY LIKE?

The XC40 looks high tech, but the UI is a hot mess. The optional Harman Kardon audio system is a must for any audiophile.   Apple Car Play and Android Auto are both supported.

The integrated voice controls work well, though you can switch to Siri or Google through your phone if you wish.  The advanced driving systems are not always perfect, for example the forward collision warning was giving false positives cannot be turned off.

WHAT IS THE CARGO SPACE LIKE?

The XC40’s cargo area is small, but smart.  The cabin has a variety of unique storage including a removable trash bucket . Felt-lined doors keep items from rattling around.

IS THIS VEHICLE A GOOD VALUE?

The XC40 is a relatively average luxury SUV at this size.

The basic and powertrain warranties are slightly longer than the coverage for some competing SUVs. You also get decent free maintenance and roadside assistance coverage.

IS THE AUDI Q3 A GOOD SUV?

Yes, the XC40 is a good SUV.  It isn’t the best in its class by a long shot, but it also isn’t the worst.  The biggest issue with the XC40’s cabin is its somewhat convoluted infotainment system.

SHOULD I BUY THE AUDI Q3 GLB?

This Volvo has a low base price for the class and comes with an abundance of standard safety and technology features. However, some rivals have easier-to-use infotainment systems.  If you don’t need flash, put safety first and can deal with a messy infotainment UI then this may be worth looking at.

THE FINAL WORD

Few SUVs stuff as much value and utility into a small package like the 2021 Volvo XC40.  It is a jack of all trades type of SUV, so if one aspect is your primary concern there is likely a better choice out there.
