The Volkswagen Tiguan (German pronunciation: [ˈfɔlksˌvaːgn̩ ˈtiːɡu̯aːn]) is a compact crossover SUV produced by the German automaker Volkswagen. Introduced in 2007, it was the Volkswagen brand’s second crossover SUV model after the Touareg. The first generation is based on the PQ46 platform, while the second generation, released in 2016, utilizes the Volkswagen Group MQB platform.^[1]

The name Tiguan is a portmanteau of the German words Tiger (“tiger“) and Leguan (“iguana“) and won a naming contest by German car magazine publisher Auto Bild—from a field of names that also included Namib, Rockton, Samun and Nanuk.^[2]

As of the spring of 2020, six million units had been sold worldwide, with 910,926 units manufactured in 2019 alone. This makes the Tiguan the best-selling car overall in the Volkswagen Group. It is also the best selling SUV in Europe.^[3]

What the critics have to say…

The compact SUV segment is full of good options, but one of our favorites is the 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan, which is one of the most well-rounded choices. It’s handsomely styled, well-equipped, and practical.

HOW DOES IT DRIVE?

The turbocharged engine is reasonably strong. We tested a front-wheel-drive Tiguan and it accelerated from 0 to 60 mph in 8.9 seconds, which is average for a small three-row SUV. But the Tiguan has a problem deploying its power smoothly and is somewhat prone to both underreacting and overreacting to moderate requests for more power. This makes it occasionally difficult to accelerate smoothly.

HOW COMFORTABLE IS IT?

With a ride that borders on plush, it’s clear Volkswagen made comfort a priority with the Tiguan. Sharp bumps are nicely rounded off, and the highway ride manages to float over imperfections while maintaining very good body control. Even larger potholes are absorbed without much notice.

WHAT IS THE INTERIOR LIKE?

The Tiguan’s interior is classically Volkswagen, which is to say that it is simple and functional but not particularly stylish or rich. Others offer more legroom in the second row, but the Tiguan is one of the only vehicles in the class that can be had with seating for seven. The Tiguan comes standard with cloth seating and partial power adjustment for the front seats.

WHAT IS THE TECHNOLOGY LIKE?

Our test vehicle was equipped with the 8-inch touchscreen. It has a neat feature that automatically displays some virtual buttons on the screen when your hand gets close to the screen. But for the price, the features seemed a bit thin, with no navigation and only the most basic information offered for vehicle status and various audio displays.

WHAT IS THE CARGO SPACE LIKE?

With just 12 cubic feet of cargo space behind the third row, the Tiguan simply can’t be a hauling vehicle when the third row is in use. With the third row folded, the Tiguan’s cargo measurements put it about in the middle of this class for raw space. With all the seats folded, we fit 19 of our carry-on boxes in the Tiguan, less than we stuffed inside key rivals including the Honda CR-V and Nissan Rogue.

If you’re willing to pay for the extra versatility a third row of seating provides, the Tiguan can represent a fairly good bargain in the compact SUV segment. The materials and features don’t always match what some rivals offer, but the Tiguan’s overall look and style are premium and modern.

Yes, the VW Tiguan is a good vehicle. This SUV has spry handling, a well-mannered ride, a large cargo hold, and plenty of features. It’s also one of the only models in the class that can be had with third-row seating. However, it has a few downsides. Its fuel economy ratings are subpar for a compact SUV, and the aforementioned third row is tight. Additionally, its infotainment system can be hard to use, and acceleration is lackluster.
