What the critics have to say…

The 2022 Porsche Macan is one of the most athletic luxury compact SUVs thanks to its powerful engines and adept handling, but it isn’t as spacious as many class rivals. The Macan doesn’t have an overall score or ranking, owing to a lack of safety data.— U.S. News

Beyond that, the Macan remains relatively impractical versus some competitors, including the BMW X3 and the Audi Q5 in terms of convenient cubby storage, a cramped back seat and cargo space. The Macan’s 17.6 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seats is about one-third less than a BMW X3 or Audi Q5 and scrawny by compact SUV standards.  — Forbes

HOW DOES IT DRIVE?

The Macan drives more like a sports car than a SUV.  That is to say that it is quick and agile, but doesn’t deliver as comfortable a ride as some of its competitors.  It’s hard to rank how the vehicle is to drive because frankly, if you wanted a sportscar you would have probably purchased one.   As a luxury SUV it pales compared to it’s competitors.   Giving this vehicle a low driving score seems odd, but given its purpose it simply doesn’t serve that purpose as well as it could.

Everyone has different driving tastes, but in general: the Macan is an exciting SUV to drive.  That said, it is focused almost primarily on the Sport and not the Utility that is expected in a SUV.   The Macan’s brakes are excellent.   The vehicle feels like it is on rails while driving, but doesn’t deliver the comfort that you may expect.

IS IT RELIABLE AND HIGH QUALITY?

The Macan has a predicted reliability rating of 82/100.  It is well built.  Porsche covers the Macan with a four-year/50,000-mile limited warranty.

HOW COMFORTABLE IS IT?

The seating is wonderful, as it should be for the most expensive vehicle in this segment.

The cabin is quiet, but the ride is stiff.  You’re driving a sportscar that is trying to be a SUV.

WHAT IS THE INTERIOR LIKE?

You slide into and crawl out of the Macan.  The controls are well placed, but take some time to become second nature.   The interior is stylish, but is also a bit dated.

Visibility is good.

WHAT IS THE TECHNOLOGY LIKE?

The Macan features the Porsche Communication Management (PCM) infotainment system.  PCM is relatively user friendly, but it may take time to get familiarized with all of the functions.  Wireless Apple CarPlay comes standard, but Android Auto isn’t available.   Not having Android Auto will be a game breaker for many drivers.

  • Standard infotainment features: a 10.9-inch touch screen, navigation, a 10-speaker stereo, satellite radio, USB ports, Bluetooth, a Wi-Fi hot spot, and wireless Apple CarPlay
  • Available infotainment features: wireless device charging, a 14-speaker Bose audio system, and a 16-speaker Burmester audio system.
  • Additional standard features: tri-zone automatic climate control

WHAT IS THE CARGO SPACE LIKE?

The Macan has less cargo room than nearly every one of its competitors.  Once again it leans on the Sport and not the Utility portion of being a SUV. It provides 17.2 cubic feet of space behind its rear seats and 52.9 cubic feet with these seats folded.

IS THIS VEHICLE A GOOD VALUE?

Macan sales sit firmly in the bottom half of all vehicles in this segment.   Given that fact, the Macan is not a great value.   The Macan loses 44.63% of its value over the first four years (from new) on average.

Compared with other small luxury SUVs, you pay more for the Macan.  As with most models in this class, the quality of materials feels a bit cheap in some areas.

IS THE Porsche Macan A GOOD SUV?

Yes, the Porsche Macan is a good SUV. This vehicle offers many optional features to help you tailor it to your exact needs. The Macan is the best handling vehicle in this segment, but has one of the least comfortable rides.  The interior is eloquent, but a bit dated.

SHOULD I BUY THE Porsche Macan?

The Macan will be of interest to you if you are looking for a small luxury SUV that drives like a sportscar. If you need a lot of cargo room, this isn’t the vehicle for you.

THE FINAL WORD

The 2022 Porsche Macan is one of the most expensive compact SUVs that you can buy.  Few class rivals can match the Macan’s combination of interior quality and driving enjoyment.
