Updated December 29, 2021

Why is this information important?

This page will tell you everything that you need to know about this vehicle.  Buying a vehicle is a huge accomplishment and a huge financial outlay.  We want you to have as much information as possible, so that you can make the best decision for you.

The Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross is a compact crossover SUV[3] produced by Japanese automaker Mitsubishi Motors since October 2017. It was previewed by the XR-PHEV and XR-PHEV II concepts, revealed in 2013 and 2015. The production version was first introduced at the 87th Geneva Motor Show in March 2017.[5][6] It slots between the RVR/ASX/Outlander Sport and Outlander in Mitsubishi’s crossover lineup.

The diesel variant was launched in June 2019,[7] followed by the PHEV variant in December 2020.[8] The diesel is not available in North America. The name of this vehicle originates from the unrelated compact sports car, the Eclipse. Unlike the original Eclipse, however, the Eclipse Cross is not assembled in the United States as Mitsubishi closed its Diamond-Star Motors plant in Normal, Illinois in February 2016. Instead, the SUV is assembled in Japan and China.

What the critics have to say…

After a brief hiatus and a midcycle refresh, the underachieving 2022 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross is back and better than ever. The look has been refined, the performance tweaked and there are new technologies and creature comforts, as well. Unfortunately, “better” still isn’t good enough to stand out in a highly competitive class, and while the Eclipse Cross feels like a fine compact crossover choice, it’s far from the best.

HOW DOES IT DRIVE?

The 2022 Eclipse Cross is powered by the same turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine as previous versions. It makes 152 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque, and at low speeds on city streets it can feel energetic in certain situations. But in general, the engine is not particularly quick, quiet or refined. This sets the tone for the rest of the driving experience.

Edmunds

IS IT RELIABLE AND HIGH QUALITY?

Is the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross Reliable?

The 2022 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross does not yet have a J.D. Power predicted reliability score.

Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross Warranty

Mitsubishi covers the Eclipse Cross with a five-year/60,000-mile basic warranty and a 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty.

HOW COMFORTABLE IS IT?

Pretty comfortable, actually. The Eclipse Cross exhibits a smooth ride on many road surfaces. Mitsubishi retuned the suspension springs and added larger rear shock absorbers. As a result the 2022 Eclipse Cross is comfortable even over significant cracks and bumps in the pavement. Mitsubishi has taken an aspect of the Eclipse Cross that was very recently a drawback — our previous Expert Rating said dips cause the vehicle to “heave mightily” — and turned it into a positive.

WHAT IS THE INTERIOR LIKE?

The interior of the Eclipse Cross is a pleasant surprise given the price point. We were impressed by the absence of cheap materials—nothing feels particularly inexpensive or looks out of place. The seats are wrapped in a stylish, durable fabric, and while cushioning was more than adequate, the lack of a lumbar adjustment left our backs wishing for more support after a few hours behind the helm.

WHAT IS THE TECHNOLOGY LIKE?

The base Eclipse Cross ES carries over with last year’s 7.0-inch infotainment display, but all other trims get an upgrade in the form of an 8.0-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Four-speaker audio is standard but SE and SEL models get a six-speaker system.

Motortrend

WHAT IS THE CARGO SPACE LIKE?

The Eclipse Cross has enough cargo space for a small family, but cubby storage becomes scarce with more than three occupants on board. We fit six carry-on suitcases behind the rear seats and 17 in total with the seats folded. The rear seats fold easily, although people with shorter torsos may have trouble reaching the release levers from the cargo area. One big plus for blooming families: A stroller fits easily in the cargo area with all the seats up.

IS THIS VEHICLE A GOOD VALUE?

There’s little doubt that, like many of its rivals, the Eclipse Cross is a light-duty rig, one best suited as a commuter vehicle rather than one for serious “adventuring” — a perfectly acceptable role for the crossover and one at which it will do well, if it can make itself heard above the “pick me, pick me” noise generated by a formidable number of competitors.

Driving.ca

IS THE Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross A GOOD SUV?

No, the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross isn’t a particularly good SUV. The powertrain provides decent power, and the Eclipse Cross gets above-average fuel economy ratings. The seats are comfortable, and the infotainment system is fairly user-friendly. This Mitsubishi is also backed by one of the best warranties in the class.

SHOULD I BUY THE Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross?

This Mitsubishi costs less than almost every other compact SUV, but it’s tough to recommend the Eclipse Cross when you compare it to its classmates, many of which are superior in several areas and more well-rounded in general. Most buyers are better off paying a little bit more for a crossover that brings a lot more to the table, such as the Honda CR-V or Kia Sportage.

THE FINAL WORD

The 2022 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross sees some significant changes compared to the previous model – which was the 2020, as the vehicle was on ice for the 2021 model year – but those changes aren’t enough to make it a compelling choice in the compact SUV class. There are simply too many competitors that are more modern and have nicer interiors, superior performance, or both.
