What the critics have to say…
The new-for-2021 Kia Sorento’s bolder and more chiseled appearance are no accident; the redesigned SUV rides on a new platform with a 1.4-inch longer wheelbase and slightly stretched overall length. Along with fresh styling, those minor changes gives the Sorento a bolder and more chiseled appearance. As a whole, the 2021 Sorento is much more angular than the somewhat lozenge-like outgoing Sorento. And from some perspectives, there are hints of its larger Kia SUV counterpart, the award-winning Telluride.

HOW DOES IT DRIVE?
The Sorento with the optional turbocharged engine is downright quick for a small SUV. And it wasn’t just the sprint to 60 mph in a mere 6.7 seconds that impressed us but also the way the power continues to build at higher speeds. For comparison, this Sorento is nearly 3 seconds faster than the similarly sized Volkswagen Tiguan and a tick faster than even the V6-powered Honda Passport. Highway merging as well as passing is not a problem in the Sorento. Just as impressive is the new eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, which is capable of near seamless shifts in slow-moving traffic or full-throttle merging.
Edmunds
IS IT RELIABLE AND HIGH QUALITY?
Is the Kia Sorento Reliable?
The 2022 Kia Sorento has a predicted reliability score of 77 out of 100. A J.D. Power predicted reliability score of 91-100 is considered the Best, 81-90 is Great, 70-80 is Average, and 0-69 is Fair and considered below average.
Kia Sorento Warranty
Kia covers the Sorento with a five-year/60,000-mile basic warranty and a 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty.
HOW COMFORTABLE IS IT?
All three rows of seats provide better-than-expected comfort for a small SUV. The front seats on our top-of-the-line test vehicle offered heating, ventilation and a good range of adjustment. The second-row captain’s chairs (a bench seat is standard on lower trim levels) were firm but more comfortable and supportive than bench seats found in other SUVs. The third-row seats are small and low to the floor but still offer enough support for adults. The dual-zone climate control is efficient and easy to use even if the touch-sensitive buttons aren’t as responsive as traditional buttons.

WHAT IS THE INTERIOR LIKE?
The Sorento’s interior is a big departure from the current version’s rather staid aesthetic. The dashboard can be outfitted with a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster and a 10.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system. The rest of the design blends rhombus-shaped air vents, integrated ambient lighting, and intricately stitched surfaces on the door panels and seat inserts. The center console hosts a rotary shift knob as well as a drive-mode selector and other vehicle functions.

WHAT IS THE TECHNOLOGY LIKE?
Our top-of-the-line test vehicle came decked out with a 10.25-inch touchscreen with navigation, an upgraded Bose audio system and a 12.3-inch digital instrument panel. The graphics are crisp and creative, but we found some on-screen buttons a bit on the small side. The Bose audio system was slightly less impressive, and we never really found a sweet spot over a wide range of music. The merely average voice command system is the least impressive tech in the Sorento, lacking natural language recognition and flexibility.
Edmunds
WHAT IS THE CARGO SPACE LIKE?
A variety of cubby storage spots and cupholders also fill out the console. While we can’t comment on how comfortable the cabin is until we ride in one, the Sorento’s wheelbase has been stretched by 1.4 inches compared with its predecessor, and Kia said the extra length and new platform increase interior space. Along with a standard third row, its second-row bench can be swapped for a pair of captain’s chairs.

IS THIS VEHICLE A GOOD VALUE?
As we’ve come to expect from Kia, the Sorento is well equipped and well built. Even with bits of hard plastic scattered about the cabin, the Sorento features thoughtful detailing and premium touches throughout. Even in a SX Prestige X-Line optioned up to $44,290, the Sorento still manages to look and feel like a good value for the money, though that price tag puts it closer to larger, more capable SUVs.
Edmunds
IS THE Kia Sorento A GOOD SUV?
Yes, the Kia Sorento is a good midsize SUV. Following a total redesign for the 2021 model year, this crossover boasts an upscale interior with comfortable seating and a user-friendly infotainment system. Under the hood, you have a choice between a fuel-efficient but mediocre-powered base engine or a peppier turbocharged variant. The Sorento rides comfortably and has composed handling.

SHOULD I BUY THE Kia Sorento?
With a sub-$30,000 base price (among the lowest in the class) and a decent list of standard features, the well-rounded 2022 Sorento is a good value. It makes a solid family vehicle and a comfortable commuter.

THE FINAL WORD
The Kia Sorento is an excellent value if you go for the lower trims. As you add features it reaches altitudes where much more capable SUVs live for the same price. All in all, it’s worth looking at for anyone who doesn’t need a third-row of seats.
