CHEVROLET SUBURBAN – RANKINGS, COMPARISONS AND INFORMATION SHEETS

WHY IS THIS INFORMATION IMPORTANT?

This page will tell you everything that you need to know about this SUV.  Buying a vehicle is a huge accomplishment and a large financial outlay.  We want you to have as much information as possible, so that you can make the best decision for you.

The Chevrolet Suburban is a full-size SUV from Chevrolet. The name started in 1934 for the 1935 U.S. model year, making it the longest continuously used automobile nameplate in production. It has traditionally been one of General Motors’ most profitable vehicles.[1] The 1935 first generation Carryall Suburban was one of the first production all-metal bodied station wagons. It now comes with three engine options: a 5.3 liter V8, 6.2 liter V8 or a 3.0 liter Inline-6 turbo diesel.[2]

The Suburban was additionally produced under the GMC marque until the GMC version was rebranded as the Yukon XL. It was also briefly marketed as a Holden. For most of its recent history, the Suburban has been a station wagon−bodied version of the Chevrolet pickup truck, including the Chevrolet C/K and Silverado series of truck-based vehicles. Cadillac offers a version called the Escalade ESV.

The Suburban is sold in the United States, Canada, Central America, Chile, Dominican Republic, Bolivia, Mexico, Peru, Philippines, and the Middle East (except Israel) while the Yukon XL is sold only in North America (exclusive to the United States and Canada; Mexico to start in 2020) and the Middle East territories (except Israel).

What the critics have to say…

This is a purpose-built vehicle for those looking to haul a ton of people or gear when a minivan is not an option and a Tahoe just isn’t large enough. Chevrolet offers the Suburban with a trio of responsive drivetrains. We weren’t impressed with the standard coil-sprung suspension setup, but the upgraded combination of magnetic ride control and air suspension conveys the Suburban with poise and keeps occupants comfortable.

HOW DOES IT DRIVE?

Our test Suburban came equipped with the optional 6.2-liter V8 engine. It has plenty of power and delivers it through a smooth-shifting 10-speed automatic transmission. At our test track, the Suburban hustled from 0 to 60 mph in 6.7 seconds. This is on par with the Expedition.

Edmunds

IS IT RELIABLE AND HIGH QUALITY?

Is the Chevrolet Suburban Reliable?

The Chevy Suburban has a predicted reliability score of 70 out of 100. A J.D. Power predicted reliability score of 91-100 is considered the Best, 81-90 is Great, 70-80 is Average, and 0-69 is Fair and considered below average.

Chevrolet Suburban Warranty

The Chevy Suburban has a three-year/36,000-mile limited warranty and a five-year/60,000-mile powertrain warranty.

HOW COMFORTABLE IS IT?

The Suburban’s new independent rear suspension more easily smooths out bumps in the road compared to older generations that had the solid rear-axle design. Our test vehicle also came with the optional Magnetic Ride Control and adaptive air suspension. They work well to create a buffer between the road and the cabin. At times the Suburban can feel a little busy and boat-like, but we’re confident the Suburban is better-riding with these suspension upgrades than without.

WHAT IS THE INTERIOR LIKE?

Most of its popular options such as wireless phone charging as well as heated and ventilated seats were previously available, but its head-up display is bigger than before. A 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster comes standard starting on the LT model.

Car and Driver

WHAT IS THE TECHNOLOGY LIKE?

The Suburban’s touchscreen is impressively clear and responsive, but because the Suburban is so large and the screen is so wide, it’s often difficult to reach. We do like that it has standard wireless Apple CarPlay, which worked quickly and effectively during our test, and wireless Android Auto. Most trims have a wireless charging pad, and the available 10-speaker Bose stereo system sounds great.

Edmunds

WHAT IS THE CARGO SPACE LIKE?

The Suburban has more cargo room than nearly every other SUV on the market. There’s 41.5 cubic feet of space behind the third-row seats, 93.8 cubic feet with these seats folded, and a whopping 144.7 cubic feet with the second and third rows folded. That’s plenty of room for hauling camping gear, bikes, home improvement supplies, furniture, and just about anything else.

IS THIS VEHICLE A GOOD VALUE?

Base versions start around $53,000 including destination fees, which is appealing for the power and space. However, some features such as adaptive cruise control are only available in the most expensive trims — in optional packages. So optioned-up models such as the High Country can end costing more than $80,000. That price is almost egregious considering the so-so materials inside.

Edmunds

IS THE Chevrolet Suburban A GOOD SUV?

The 2022 Chevrolet Suburban is a great option in the large SUV class. The three-row Suburban has a vast interior with seating for seven to nine occupants, depending on configuration, and more cargo space than any other SUV on the market. A wealth of tech and driver assistance features come standard, including an easy-to-use 10.2-inch touch screen. The Suburban also impresses with its muscular gas and diesel engine options, high towing capacity, and cushioned ride. It’s equal parts workhorse and family hauler.

SHOULD I BUY THE Chevrolet Suburban?

The 2022 Chevrolet Suburban is well worth a look if you’re shopping for a large three-row SUV but perhaps not as a first pick. Compelling alternatives include the all-new Jeep Wagoneer and well-rounded Ford Expedition. There’s also the mechanically similar but smaller Chevrolet Tahoe, which is easier to park and maneuver around town.

THE FINAL WORD

This is a purpose driven vehicle.  If you need to haul a lot of people and their gear then this is a top choice.  If you don’t need that space then there are plenty of other options that may suit you much better.
