What the critics have to say…

When it comes to luxury appointments, available powertrains and overall quality, it’s hard to find fault with the 2021 BMW X7. The X7 isn’t without drawbacks, such as the confusing climate-control interface and the big price tag (especially when you start adding options), but we consider it a strong contender in its class.
Edmunds

What is exciting about the X7 is what’s exciting about many contemporary BMWs: great powertrains, high-quality interior appointments with thoughtful touches that offer delight and comfort-leaning ride quality. The X7 is not the ultimate driving machine BMWs once were. It is a cruiser, capable of devouring highway miles and keeping occupants isolated, particularly useful if some of these are children (or pets).

HOW DOES IT DRIVE?

The X7 provides fantastic acceleration. There is some lag between hitting the gas pedal and when you start moving, which can make low speed driving annoying.

The steering is average at best, not what you would expect from a BMW.   The car is stable though, with little to no roll around corners.

IS IT RELIABLE AND HIGH QUALITY?

Is the BMW X7 Reliable?

The 2022 BMW X7 has a predicted reliability score of 83 out of 100. A J.D. Power predicted reliability score of 91-100 is considered the Best, 81-90 is Great, 70-80 is Average, and 0-69 is Fair and considered below average.

BMW X7 Warranty

BMW covers the X7 with a four-year/50,000-mile basic warranty.

HOW COMFORTABLE IS IT?

The X7 has an available road-scanning system that adjusts the suspension based on what it sees. The system is effective at keeping the ride smooth over large pavement impairments, but the X7 becomes “floaty” on relatively smooth roads.

The X7 has fantastic seats.  The cabin is exquisitely quiet.  The climate control system is equally bad.  The auto setting requires you to make additional adjustments to the fan intensity and temperature of the dash panel vents. That’s not auto.  That’s manual.  You have to continuously monkey with the controls to keep things comfortable.

WHAT IS THE INTERIOR LIKE?

The seats can be setup to accommodate nearly anyone.  Visibility is fantastic. Mirrors and an extensive camera array provide a commanding outward view.

The controls are either great or terrible with little in between.  Most buttons are easy to find. Gesture controls seem to be a love / hate type of control among users.

WHAT IS THE TECHNOLOGY LIKE?

The displays are easy to read and react quickly to control inputs and voice commands. There is however, a learning curve (more like a cliff) with regards to the infotainment system.  The X7 comes with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto standard.

The X7’s adaptive cruise control system controls speed and steering without driver input, only asking that you keep your eyes on the road (verified with a driver-facing camera).

WHAT IS THE CARGO SPACE LIKE?

The X7 has lots of room and smart cargo-storage options.   There is  deep storage space underneath the third row where a spare tire would typically reside. While the door pockets are large, interior storage options are merely adequate.

Power-adjusting and -folding second and third rows are slow but easy to operate.

IS THIS VEHICLE A GOOD VALUE?

The X7’s price, features and build quality live up to what you’d expect from a large German luxury SUV. The build quality is excellent, while extensive and high-quality leather and trimmings reinforce the high-end experience. The four-year/50,000-mile basic and powertrain warranties are average when you look at similar vehicles. But BMW goes a bit above average by covering scheduled maintenance for three years/36,000 miles and providing 24-hour roadside assistance for four years without a mileage restriction.

IS THE BMW X7 A GOOD SUV?

Yes, the BMW X7 is a good luxury large SUV. It has well-rounded overall performance, from a capable standard six-cylinder engine to two optional raucous V8s. Fuel economy is decent, and this big vehicle treats occupants to a plush ride.

The cabin is full of quality materials and features.

SHOULD I BUY THE BMW X7?

Not only is the BMW X7 a good vehicle, it’s a reasonably good value thanks to the long list of standard features, and its base price is below average for the class. However, anytime you’re spending this kind of coin on a new car, it’s worth shopping around to see if there’s a better choice. The Mercedes-Benz GLS is more athletic than the BMW, while the Audi Q7 is well-rounded and a lot less expensive than the X7.

THE FINAL WORD

The 2022 BMW X7 is a well-rounded SUV, with an excellent cabin, strong engines, good ride, and wealth of technology. However, you may want to consider a rival SUV if you prioritize cargo space or need a very roomy seven-seat vehicle.
