The Alfa Romeo Stelvio (Tipo 949) is a compact luxury crossover SUV manufactured and marketed by the Alfa Romeo subdivision of Stellantis (formely with FCA), first revealed at the 2016 Los Angeles Auto Show, and entering production at the Cassino Plant at the end of 2016.[3] It is currently Alfa Romeo’s best-selling model, with roughly 43,000 sold in 2018.
The Stelvio uses FCA’s Giorgio platform, shared with the D-segment Giulia saloon.[4] The name Stelvio derives from the Stelvio Pass,[1] Italy’s highest mountain pass, noted for its 48 circuitous switchbacks.

HOW DOES IT DRIVE?
The Stelvio is an SUV for people who love driving, with a strong and responsive engine, sporty transmission and engaging handling. Power delivery from the four-cylinder engine is urgent, and you’ll be hard-pressed to feel the difference between the Stelvio and some vehicles with bigger engines. Our as-tested 0-60 mph time of 5.7 seconds puts the Stelvio within half a second of some heavy hitters.

HOW COMFORTABLE IS IT?
Ride quality is impressive for a sporty crossover. The Stelvio absorbs sharper bumps and road imperfections yet still feels connected to the road. It can get bouncy, especially on uneven concrete-slab freeways. Around town, it’s one of the more comfortable sport-oriented crossovers.

WHAT IS THE INTERIOR LIKE?
Like the Giulia sedan, the Stelvio offers a stylish interior and a comfortable driving position. Sportier models can be had with carbon-fiber trim, but those seeking a more upscale appearance can choose wood inlays. In addition to a wonderful driving position, leather upholstery covers its supportive front seats, and handsome aluminum accents adorn the dash, doors, and center console.

WHAT IS THE TECHNOLOGY LIKE?
The Stelvio’s technology is cleanly integrated, but there’s no question it lags the competition. A good adaptive cruise system and high-quality stereo aside, it’s clear that technology isn’t the Stelvio’s focus. In our testing, Bluetooth took a surprisingly long time to boot up. We also had issues accessing music on phones via USB.

WHAT IS THE CARGO SPACE LIKE?
The Stelvio has some useful storage tricks up its Italian sleeve, but with a small cargo area behind the back seat, it’s not the most capacious crossover among this set. Although the Alfa’s other cubbies only held average amounts, we appreciated the useful smartphone slot between its cupholders and the tray near the driver’s left knee. The center console also has a nifty removable tray at the bottom.

IS THIS VEHICLE A GOOD VALUE?
The Stelvio is a pretty thing, too, especially for the segment. Few SUVs can match its iconic shield grille, sculpted sheetmetal, and fastback roofline for visual flair. The cabin is well-designed, if a little cramped, and our initial niggles with interior quality were addressed with last year’s meaningful update. For something to help you stand out from the standard players, the Stelvio is hard to beat.

IS THE STELVIO A GOOD SUV?
Yes, the Alfa Romeo Stelvio is a good luxury compact SUV. It delivers spirited handling and boasts a punchy base engine. There’s an even more brutish V6 in the top-spec Quadrifoglio. However, this Alfa has some interior shortcomings, such as firm seats and a small cargo hold. For a luxury SUV, it’s not all that luxurious either.

The Stelvio a dynamic car with a great engine. It checks many of the boxes if you looking for a “driver’s” car. The cargo space and interior aren’t as nice as it’s competitors though.
